August 10th 2010. I stepped off a plane from my last deployment, and the end of my operational career. The day before I left Afghanistan I fired a Javelin, shot some .300 Win Mag, rushed to take a shower and then began the 48 hour journey home from Kandahar to San Diego. I don’t know if my kids remember this day, but I will never forgot it. I was exhausted, down about 20 pounds, and did not know what reaction to expect from them. Some people make a big deal about war and combat, and in my personal opinion it is over glorified and dramatized often. It’s not special, and you aren’t special for experiencing it. I always knew my “why,” and it is perfectly captured in these pictures. I’m as flawed as the next man, probably more than most. I have failed, many times in every aspect of my life. Knowing my motivation and understanding my “why” has helped return me to the path I should be on more than once. I may never be their “why,” but they will always be mine.
