However, the native Texan has years of expertise working in the construction industry that didn’t always welcome him. Thomas, who also has a PhD in Physics, didn’t begin working in the home development area until he met Bynum.

Bynum remembers his stint as a foreman on projects in Texas: “There was a lot of nasty talk against the LGBTQ community.” Even though he claims the harsh remarks weren’t directly spoken in reference to him, he claims the intolerance served as the impetus for his resignation from the organization. But Bynum wasn’t giving up on the business.

According to Bynum, “That was the number one thing I said when I left there.” “I remember thinking, ‘One day, I’m going to have a place, and it won’t matter. Nobody will ever feel miserable, regardless of who or what they are. That’s not right.

“I believe that anyone who steps into a world that perhaps is stereotypically unlike their own will have some eyebrows raised. There will be some media coverage,” Bynum tells PEOPLE. “However, I believe that the secret to what we’ve attempted is to make sure that it’s done for the correct reasons. We can convey all the great aspects of it. We did our utmost to ensure that the content we were presenting on the broadcast was as genuine as possible.

Bynum and Thomas have risen to local fame in Detroit after a few seasons of Bargain Block.
