Norah Jones family has very deep roots in the music industry. Norah father Ravi Shankar was a sitarist and her mother Sue Jones was a concert producer.
According to Rediff, Norah was born from Ravi and Sue's affair. Ravi was a married man when the affair started and also had another partner as well. Despite being married, Ravi was estranged from his wife and divided his affection between Sue and Norah and his other partner.
Norah Jones father Shankar is an Indian composer and sitarist, he was also the recipient of the highest Indian civilian honor, Bharat Ratna. Ravi started off as a dancer in his elder brother's dance troupe and initially performed in India and later in Europe as well.
He quit dancing to study sitar in 1938 and started composing music in 1944. He also served as a musical director for All India Radio between 1949 to 1956. He is partly responsible for introducing and making Indian classical music and instruments in the western world.
Ravi also worked with famed western musicians and bands including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Beatles guitarist George Harrison. The list of his accolades goes on and on, but some major highlights include five Grammy Awards and one Polar Music Award.
While his musical career was very successful and followed a linear upward curve, his love life was more chaotic. According to Rediff, Shankhar had many partners throughout his lifetime and he could not resist "free love."
Ravi had a total of 4 serious relationships which resulted in at least one childbirth or marriage. However, in his autobiography, the musician revealed he could fall in love with different women in different places and was like keeping a girl in every port, via Rediff.
Among his numerous romantic partners was Sue Jones, an American concert producer, and Norah Jones mother. The pair started their relationship in the late 1970s and ended in 1986 and never made comments about each other publicly.
According to Telegraph, Sue attended Shankhar's memorial service held in California and was seated in the front row designated for his family members. she did not read out a condolence message at the service.
